Thomas
Detmer

I am an Assistant Professor at Iowa State University and Director of the North Central Regional Aquaculture Center. My research addresses local, regional, and global challenges in fisheries, freshwater ecosystems, and aquaculture. I study lakes, reservoirs, streams and hatcheries across the West, Midwest, and Adirondacks to build insight that supports sustainable management and conservation for today — and for future generations.

My research spans use-inspired (applied) and curiosity-driven (basic) investigations into fish and aquatic ecosystems, with particular focus on sustainable fisheries, freshwater ecosystems and aquaculture. I combine natural experiments, laboratory and mesocosm studies, and modeling to explore the patterns and processes that shape fisheries and aquatic ecosystem structure and function. Alongside this work, I am committed to training the next generation of aquatic environmentalists and enhancing public awareness of the fragility of fisheries and aquatic ecosystems.

I strongly believe in incorporating students in research and outreach events, here is a group of summer interns prepping for an event showcasing research on interactions between fisheries and environmental change.
